| Description |
The Genesis Institute of PUC-Rio, a complementary unit of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), has the purpose of transferring knowledge from the university to society through the formation of entrepreneurs and creation of ventures; contributing to the improvement of life quality of the region where it is inserted. The Institute works as a permanent center of innovation that is concerned in being an environment of support and inspiration to the development of self-sustainable enterprises and entrepreneurs. Gênesis Institute has five units: Technological Incubator, Social Incubator of Communities, Cultural Incubator, Junior Enterprise and Coordination of Entrepreneurship Teaching.
The Coordination of Entrepreneurship Teaching is a unit of Genesis Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneur Action, created in 2000, to promote educational activities, research and extension in the entrepreneurship area. Trough CEMP, PUC-Rio offers to students from any graduation course, courses about entrepreneurship behavior aspects, structuralization of business plans, self-entrepreneurship planning, the insertion in business or the autonomous activity. In the teaching area, CEMP acts complementing graduation through the Entrepreneurs Formation Program (EFP) and the additional domain of entrepreneurship. CEMP has also multiplied its knowledge by making programs that transfer our experience to other universities around the world, those pragrams are already being sucsessful in Chile and Peru.
The Junior Enterprise of PUC-Rio offers solutions in consulting, working with a costumers' portfolio that is improving since 1995, the foundation year. It is a multidisciplinary company composed exclusively by PUC-Rio’s graduating students (71 members in 2007). The students are assisted by the best professors of this institution, the JE PUC-Rio is distinguished for helping entrepreneurs from all levels to reach success in their businesses.
In 2007, our Incubators had in total 8 pre-incubated enterprises, 24 incubated enterprises and 36 graduated enterprises in the following areas: automation, handcraft, audio, vídeo & digital media, design, publishing, energy & oil, enterteinment, education, knowledge management, jewels & accessories, logistics & geoprocessing, fashion, environment, specialized services, telecommunications, information technology and tourism. Those enterprises have an estimated income of US$ 50.000.000 per year.
The Technological Incubator of Gênesis started in 1997 and aims to create enterprises of technological base, self-sustainable and capable of impacting positively in the economic development of its region. That way, the Technological Incubator supports the projects since planning until the formation of enterprise networks.
The Genesis Cultural Incubator is the first Cultural Incubator of Latin America, launched in march of 2002, with the objective of assisting the development of enterprises of cultural and artistic base. Among other projects, the Cultural Incubator made a study of the productive chain of the music industry, aiming to satisfy the scarcity of works that approach the economic importance of this industry. Such research gave origin to innumerable other projects. According to the demands of the market, the Cultural Incubator Gênesis of PUC-Rio launched in the year of 2004, in partnership with the Department of Art & Design, the Jewelry Design Incubator, being the first one in Brazil specialized in this segment. Now we are also implementating an Incubator of Tourism related enterprises.
The Social Incubator of Communities has the purpose to fortify local communities and cities, through entrepreneur’s formation and entrepreneurship generation, using social technologies. The work made in communities and cities has the objective of generating entrepreneurial activity that are going to integrate a determined productive cycle, creating an entrepreneurial environment that benefits the whole community in many aspects, mainly, in the rise of life quality, citizenship and world vision. With the support of InfoDev (World Bank), the Social Incubator supported, since 2005, entrepreneurship in Vila Canoas, a low-income community of Rio de Janeiro. Another work made in Vila Canoas was a local diagnosis of needs and opportunities of the community.
